Dinner Hosting Strategies

If it's your turn to host a holiday dinner this year, here are a few ideas that will make your job a little easier.

Quick Chill Station - Make a tub of salted ice water (1 cup salt per gallon of water) to keep bottles/cans of drinks chilled.  This will free up fridge space for other things.

No Cook Apps - Make simple, no cook appetizers for the meal. A beautiful charcuterie  board with cheeses, cured meats, olives, crackers, grapes, spiced nuts and spreads takes minutes to put together and can be served on a board or beautiful tray.  If it's too fancy for the little ones, have some fresh fruit, veggies and dips for them as well.

Organize Buffet/Drinks - If you are eating buffet style, keep like things together as far as meats and side dishes.  Have another area for desserts and one for drinks as well.  People may have more drink refills than food, and this will help keep one area from getting to crowded.  

Collect "To Go" Containers - Before the big day arrives, collect some containers to fill with leftovers and send home with guests.  That way, they can enjoy the great food the next day at their home as well and you will have less you need to deal with in your fridge.  *For something really frugal, save plastic food containers (yogurt, sour cream and whipped topping containers) through the year so you have a large stash to send home with your kids and grandkids.
