Accent Wall Fun

There are so many things you can do to a wall in your home to make it stand out.  It doesn't necessarily have to be a huge wall to have an accent, but, just a spot where you would like to drawn special attention to.  Here are a few things you can do to make your accent wall stand out:

Color - One way to draw attention to a certain wall is through color.  Just painting one wall in a room a different color to enhance a piece of furniture in front of it or bring out that color in fabrics in the room, can certainly make a big statement.  Just be sure it compliments the other main color in the room.

Trim or Wood - Another way to add interest to a specific area is to add wood (such as shiplap or other wood boards) or by adding some trim work with a chair rail or some crown molding.  You can also add interest by just painting the trim a different color to add an accent on the wall.  White board and batten or wainscoting halfway up a wall can bring a great accent to a space as well.

Gallery Wall - Another type of accent wall you can have is a gallery wall.  You can make a gallery wall with art that you love or even just photographs of family, friends or special places you have been.  Even plain black and white photos can have more interest with different shapes or sizes of frames, even if they are all the same color.  You want the eye drawn to the art/photos on the wall as opposed to just the wall itself.

Mirrors - Different types of mirrors (or even a whole mirrored wall) can add a lot of light and interest to a room.  With several mirrors it will be more about the frames of them and how they are arranged, with a wall of mirrors it's definitely about the mirrors themselves.  Mirrors not only help add light to a space, but they can trick the eye to make a small space appear larger than it really is.

Patterns - Of course, wallpaper, patterned painting techniques or even a mural can make an accent wall stand out in a space.  Sometimes it doesn't take much to make a wall leap out in a room.  A whole room of a crazy pattern or mural might be too much, but one wall will bring interest and beauty into your space.

Tile - Tile not only can be a beautiful accent, but it also can be useful as well.  A tiled shower wall, a backsplash in a kitchen or even an entire fireplace wall can look gorgeous, but the tile can also protect the wall behind from such things as water, grease, food stains and heat.  Also, added tile in an unexpected place can just add richness along with beauty.

There are so many ways you can dress up your accent wall, the sky (or ceiling) is the limit!  Wait....ceilings can be accent walls too!
